How do I wean him when he is refusing to drink out of a cup/bottle?

My 12 month old is a very determined little boy who loves his boobie-feed. I would very much like to wean him off the boob now but he refuses to drink anything else. If I deprive him of the boobie in the hope he will drink something else he just refuses and will not let up until he gets his boobie. So how do I wean him when he is refusing to drink out of a cup/bottle?

Answer: Hi There, Sounds like you have done a great job with breastfeeding, well done! I am assuming he has water during the day so is getting his fluid needs meet, plus a breastfeed or two a day? If this is the case, you can simply wean him off the breast, offer a little bit of cheese or extra yoghurt in the day to compensate for calcium. Its fine if he opts not to drink milk (now or even long term). You can offer him milk once he is weaned, this way its not an either or, but rather just a choice of fluid. You can also try other calcium- enriched drinks with him. I have a tip sheet on Huggies on weaning and cows` milk, it explains how much milk toddlers need in order to reach their daily serving and RDI of calcium. It also covers options if milk isnt for them. The link is: Milk Intake Also for weaning tips you might like to look at these sites: http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au/bfinfo/weaning.html http://www.cyh.com/HealthTopics/HealthTopicDetails.aspx?p=114&np=302&id=1941 I hope that helps, good luck with the transition, you will have an independent little person and your body to yourself in no time. All the best, Leanne
