hi leanne, my son is 9 months old and his weight has been stable for about a month now.he is extremely active.he eats healthy and looks healthy but the peadiatrition said that he should at least weigh 1/2 a kilo more.he is 7.8kg.he weighed 3.3 when born.i am seeing the doctor once a week as well as the baby clinic.he is a reflux baby and on thickened formula.he has 4 180ml bottles a day in which sometimes doesnt drink them all.he has 3 meals a day plus snacks.breakfast 1 weetbix fruit water.lunch sandwich which he eats half,custard or yogurt water,dinner meat or fish and vegetables water.is he getting enough?he seems content with that.thanks debbie
This is an area I have been asked a lot about and have put together a fact sheet on it, which is now on my web site (www.sneakys.com.au
under the resources section). But keep in mind that weight gain in infancy is best done as you are, under the guidance of a paediatrician. My tip sheet is really more for toddlers and on as you are more likely to be dealing with a little person who is also gain muscle mass and has a wide diet.
When someone says `underweight` it shouldn`t be confused with `not on the 50th percentile`. If your toddler is healthy and growing well then even skinny kids are likely to be just fine. Like adults they vary in size and shape. To some extent I wonder if you may be fighting genetics here, if you or your partner are slim then your bub may just be heading to his genetically predetermined size. If your little one has grown at a consistent rate without any sudden or sliding movements down the percentiles this is more support that things are okay. From what you have said it sounds like baby hasn`t gained weight. While percentile shifts are common they tend to stop before 2, weight stagnation is important to investigate.
At this age, an extra formula feed may be helpful as they tend to have more calories than many meals that babies of this age tend to eat. It is tricky as babies have such tiny tummies and can only consume so much food in any period of time. So really you may need to focus on energy dense foods (with healthy fats) as they will offer more calories than lower energy foods such as fruit, vegies and grains. Keeping allergies in mind you could look at adding some ground nuts and seeds (such as sunflower seeds, almonds, linseeds, pumpkin seeds etc) into his meals each day, this will increase fat and protein and essential fatty acids as well as loads of other nutrients.
When baby is a little older and formula is less important you could offer smoothies, they are fantastic, use your choice of milk, add a nice yoghurt and some fruit, they are also great as ice-blocks in summer. You can pack a lot into those! Egg yolk from next month onwards would great. You could also try mashed potato with cheese and a knob of butter, toppings on crackers such as cream cheese or almond paste. Other protein foods include fish, meat, nuts, beans, seeds, legumes etc.
So I hope that gives you some guidance and things start to plateau out and a pattern emerges of consistent weight.
