She is in a lot of pain everytime she poos

My baby is 9 months old, breastfeeding & on solids. She keeps passing hard stools & now has a split in her back passage. Doctor suggested taking dairy out of our diet but that doesn`t seem to have helped. I give her prune juice everyday in an attempt to soften the stools but she is in a lot of pain everytime she poos. Her usual diet is weetbix 4 brekkie, fruit 4 lunch then mashed veges 4 dinner. She has water with every feed & still breastfeeds about 4 times a day. Is there anything else you can suggest that may be causing this.

Answer: Hi There, that can be so distressing. There are few things to consider, for example:
  • Check that the Weet-Bix is thoroughly immersed in fluid, if you have ever let Weet-Bix sit you will know just how much fluid they can absorb.
  • Increase baby’s water intake even further, offer her water as often as you can think to right through out the day. The prune juice is probably not helping those sorts of things tend to work on a different level and not really affect constipation.
  • Probiotics have been shown to improve stool softness; so you could ask at a good health food shop about a suitable one for a bub or opt for a really good yoghurt (which has a high level of fluid as a food).
  • Check that there is not high salt foods and that salt isn’t added to any of baby’s foods.
Anecdotally cheese has been said to be constipating, but it may just be other aspects of cheese that causes a drop in fluid levels. Dairy is an important source of calcium. If things don’t improve perhaps consider popping into another GP for a second look at the situation. Fingers crossed that it all resolves quickly. All the best, Leanne
