Is it safe to eat peanut butter when you`re pregnant?

hi there,
I am 20 weeks pregnant and am craving peanut butter. Is it safe to eat peanut butter when you`re pregnant? I sure I read somewhere that it is best to avoid it as the child I`m carrying may be more likely to have an allergy to peanuts if I eat them while pregnant. What`s your thoughts??
Suzi.

Answer: Hi Suzi, A big congrats to you!!!! Most research out now tends to encourage a diverse diet during pregnancy as it may help avoid allergies in infancy. I have to say, peanut butter, I am not a fan of, I do however recommend the Melrose Almond Paste! Lovely! Lots of healthy fats, good source of calcium, no additives or sugar, just all good stuff. Having said that, to my knowledge there is no problem with peanut butter these days as the aflotoxin issue appears over. Just as a bit of background on the allergy issue; In developed countries we have long been avoiding allergy foods, and sadly the allergy rates have risen. Developing countries have shown different trends, so, guidelines are about to change in regards to the common allergy forming foods. For example, gluten, where once it was thought best to delay it till later in the first year, it is now believed that such foods should be offered earlier. Hope that helps, all the best for motherhood. Leanne
