He is waking happy but obviously gets tired very quickly

Hi Maree,
I have a 10 month old who has been waking at 5am for the last couple of months. I have tried everything ie. bed earlier, bed later, patting, shorter day sleeps. Now and than I have resorted to giving a bottle and that sometimes works in getting him to sleep til 6.30 - 7am. Mostly I have just left him to coo but an hour later he is still awake and starts to get annoyed. He is waking happy but obviously gets so tired very quickly. He goes to bed at 7.30pm but i am thinking of moving it back to 7pm and has 2 sleeps one about 1 hour and the other 1 1/2 hours.

If I continue in what I am doing by letting him chat and than get him up around 6am when he starts to get annoyed, how long will this likely go on for? Some people suggest giving a bottle as soon as he wakes where some people suggest treating it like any other night waking. Is giving a bottle a bad thing? Also, can you suggest anything else that i might try?

Answer: Hi, I guess it really depends on how you are feeling too but babies thrive on routine. If you are happy to let him coo and then start the day at 6 am then you can get a fair bit of your chores done (prepared dinner for the evening get the washing on) and then go to bed a bit earlier youself at night. At this age the ideal would be get baby down to sleep at 7pm up around 6 to 7am and 2 naps of around11/2 hour each which is pretty much what he is doing except is waking a bit earlier than you would like. Cheers, Maree
