She is a great sleeper, but the problem is getting her to go to bed

Hi Maree,
Sophie is 2.5yo, and ever since she was a baby, has been a great sleeper. My problem at the moment, is getting her to go to bed. I let her have approx 3 hours sleep in the afternoon as she can get very grumpy if she doesn`t get it, however that means sleeptime isn`t til 8pm, which I think is fine, however, she has been pushing the boundaries and gets up 3 or 4 times before she finally goes to sleep. Should I just bite the bullet and wake her after 2 hours sleep in the afternoon, or should I just put her to bed when she is tired.
I don`t have any problems with her in regards to her crying or saying she`s hungry or thirsty, she just gets up.

Answer: Hi Nicki, 3 hours is a long nap, what you need to keep in mind is that children thrive on routine and having boundaries set for them. A regular bedtime is always the best way with a bit of flexibility for days when you can see she is obviously tired earlier in the evening or if the nap occurred later and she can go an extra half hour before bed at night. If you stay in control and let her know it`s not ok with you that she gets up this will benefit everyone in the long run. Cheers, Maree
