Answer: Hi There, Thank you for your email. Baby sign language is a great tool to encourage speech and help those who have communication difficulties. It is not too late to start with your son at 17 months. The way to start is to choose around five signs initially, a combination of practical and motivational signs. These signs may include eat, drink, teddy bear, book, car, sleep, dog etc. Make sure that you choose signs that your baby is interested in. Then incorporate these signs into your daily routines always ensuring that you say the word each time you sign the word. If you do have any concerns about your son`s speech, I would recommend you visit your local GP and they can refer you onto a speech therapist if necessary. All the best, Jackie
