Do you have any suggestions that may help her to accept a bottle?

Hi. I`m currently breastfeeding my 10 week old baby but I`d like to start weaning her as I need to return to work shortly and I`ve decided not to continue breastfeeding when I do. I`m having difficulty with getting her to accept a bottle. She just won`t take it! I`ve tried a couple of different teats and she won`t take the bottle regardless of whether it`s breastmilk or formula. I`ve tried waiting until she`s really hungry but she just ends up screaming and after 20mins of this (when we`re both upset) I usually give in and feed her from the breast. Ideally I would like to partially breastfeed and bottlefeed for a while until I decide to totally wean her. At the moment I feel I can`t leave her in anyone`s care while I attend the occasional appointment as she will only accept food from me. Do you have any suggestions that may help her to accept a bottle. Thanks, Sally.

Answer: Hi Sally, Unfortunately at around this time (10-12 wks) is a really difficult time for babies as they really love whatever they have been used to and will hold out all day if need be until the favoured milk supply is provided. As this is also a practical question that doesnt specifically require a psychologist you can contact your local breastfeeding member for ideas as they are fantastic with these practical issues http://www.breastfeeding.asn.au. As a pyschologist though, I would want to discuss with you the issues surrounding your desicions to go back to work, the logistics of your work and other options. Feel free to contact me again betty@beingamother.com. ...Betty
