At what age roughly do they start recognising words and not just pictures?

Hello Brett,
My question is regarding my 17 month old daughter. She loves books and seems to forever have her head stuck in one.
My question is, she seems to be reading the books to herself in her own little language with the occasional real word chucked in. She also seems to know when the book is upside down and always turns it around the right way.

Are these goods signs? She also tends to love the same books, mostly with animals in it. Should I be encouraging a broader range of subjects?

At what age roughly do they start recognising words and not just pictures?
Thanks
Alison

Answer: Hi Alison, It sounds like your daughter is well on the way to a lifelong love affair with books! You should absolutely, positively encourage her any way you can. It`s worthwhile encouraging a broader range of subjects, but remember it`s important not to push too hard. Books are meant to be fun! If she only shows an interest in books with animals, then that`s okay too. Speed of learning differs from child to child, so at this stage it`s worthwhile to just let her learn to `read` at her own pace. Brett
