My 3 almost 4 year has been pooing in the toilet for the last 6 months. Now he is scared of the toilet, thinks something in it is going to get him.
I've tried sticker charts, treats, reasurrance. Nothing is working. He will do a small poo in his pants, then another an hour later and so on. Help!
Answer: This can be very normal and common with toddlers. Being scared of the "letting go" sensation when pooing, hearing the drop into the toilet and just generally having big fears in a little body mean that this sort of behavioural fallout is common. The most important thing is that you stay calm, matter of fact, role model appropriate toileting behaviour and just be patient with him. Make sure his diet is high in water, fibre and roughage as constipation will cause him discomfort and will only add to his reluctance and lead to him holding on. Sit him on the toilet after a meal and when he's showing signs of needing to go. You sit on the floor beside him and look at a book together or engage him in conversation. The more relaxed he is the better. You may also need to introduce a potty or a potty chair, a step and toilet seat insert or any other tools which help him to feel comfortable and relaxed. Best Jane
