Answer: This sounds like a normal developmental phase of your toddler wanting to exert a little independence and control which is normal and very age appropriate. However, unless you are willing to continue feeding him and for him to sit on your lap then you will need to change what you are doing. Placing him in the highchair when he is hungry and due to eat and staying calm and consistent will help. And the other things you need to do are to stop feeding him and letting him sit on your lap because this is what he will continue to protest for as long as you allow him to do this and support his behaviour. At 18 months of age he is old enough to feed himself and control what and how much he eats. The onus of control over this needs to come from him rather than you. Self feeding is a learned skill and through repetition and exposure, practice and frequency he will learn what is involved. Essentially, if you want to see a change in him then you need to initiate the changes you want to see happen first and then stick with your plan. Best Jane
