Are these signs of PND? And what should I do?

Hi there Alex, my son is 4 weeks old and i found out i was having a boy at my 20 week ultrasound. I was very upset to find out i was having another boy and it has been sitting in the back of my mind ever since, I ended up becoming happy with the fact i was having a boy. When he was born i was overjoyed. But over the past week i have been becoming detached from him, i despise breastfeeding him, i dont like being alone with him especially when he is crying, i cry over the smallest things. Are these signs of PND? And what should i do?

Answer: Hi, Yes you do need to talk to someone as soon as possible about how you are feeling. Start with your GP who should be able to refer you to an appropriate professional. You could also talk to the Early Childhood Health Centre. Don’t be afraid to tell someone as your feelings are very common and as soon as you do you can start to look towards feeling better. There are also some good organisations with websites that have information such as Beyond Blue and the Black Dog Institute. Best wishes, Alex
