I have been told that I am positive for Strep B. What is it?
I`m due to give birth to my second child anyday and have been told that I am positive for Strep B. What is it? I didn`t have it for my first child so why would I have it now? Can my husband get it from me? How did I contract it? And finally once I have the antibiotics in labour will I be cured from it? Its made me really nervous and I dont want anything to happen to my baby. Please help!
Strep B is a normal vaginal flora that is present in about 75% of all women at sometime. It is not anything that you catch or anything that is contagious – it is just a normal thing that is there! It is tested for as it can cause a very rare infection in some newborn babies. If a woman is given one or two doses of antibiotics just before the birth it kills off enough of the flora to substantially reduce the risk of this infection for the baby.
